Carve Your Own Kitchen Utensils!
There are more and more reports about how harmful plastic can be when combined with heat and wear. Regardless of the safety debate, I personally prefer kitchen utensils made of either metal or WOOD—and ideally something beautiful that’s connected to myself or a good friend. Here you get the chance to create something that will bring back happy memories every time you hold your handcrafted kitchen utensil-art. =)
In this course, you’ll get the opportunity to try out various cutting tools. With an axe, you rough out the basic shape of your utensil—or even shape it close to finished, if you’re brave. Then, you can try sitting in a carving horse, and with ergonomic tools like a drawknife, shave, or spokeshave, you can continue carving until you’re satisfied. If you’re making a spoon or ladle, you’ll also use a spoon knife. The final adjustments are made with a really sharp knife.
Total beginners are very welcome. Children are also welcome when accompanied by an adult. The course is adapted so that everyone can join in. If the child is very young, it’s important that you supervise their carving closely. For those who need it, we can also start with basic carving exercises.
As a beginner, you’ll usually finish one or two kitchen utensils within 6 hours, depending entirely on how detailed you are and how much experience you have.
Other topics covered based on participants’ interests:
- sharpening knives and other cutting tools
- decorative carving
- surface treatment and care of the utensil
